First thing is to decide on the type of bricks you want to use in your patio. For this, you can either go for brick with mortar or make it mortar less. Mortar less bricks are quite in due to its durability. Generally, bricks with 4×8 inch dimension suit the requirement yet you can check out other dimensions too. In addition, it is better to decide on how you are willing to put the bricks like whether you want to fill the gaps between two bricks with sand or small marbles.

Second most important thing, once you have decided on the types of bricks is the quantity of bricks required. Therefore, here is a simple rule to calculate, while using the appropriate size bricks such as 4×8 inches, first measure the area for paving by multiplying length and breadth and then multiply it again with 5 and finally in order to adjust any waste and defects add 5 percent to the total figure.

Once you are through these important steps, the final procedure is to select the pattern in which you want to place the bricks. You can either use the standard patters like basket weave pattern or even create your own pattern by mixing two or more patterns.

Having watched your video I think I will attempt to do a small area and see how I get on.

If all goes to plan I will slowly work my way out until I have a great looking patio.

I will start in a small side area of my garden and use this as a practise run first.

Good article. One thing to add; if the brick pavers are made of clay, you’ll want to mortar them. If they are made of concrete, you can lay them dry (on a bed of 4″ compacted gravel and 1″ screeded sand) and then fill the joints in with sand or polymeric sand.
